Environmental initiatives

Steel: 100% recyclable
Steel can be recycled indefinitely, without losing any of its qualities. Around 40% of the world's steel production comes from recycling. Steel buildings that have reached the end of their useful life require no demolition, are easy to dismantle and their components can be recycled.
Committed to improving our environmental performance
BlueScope is committed to respecting the environment by doing the right thing.
We take steps and work closely with our partners to reduce our environmental footprint. To achieve these goals, we implement environmental management action plans.
In addition to complying with mandatory requirements, we have undertaken a number of initiatives to reduce our impact on the environment.
Responsible waste management
For several years now, BlueScope Acier has been integrating environmental management into its business processes. In particular, the company is committed to optimizing its ecological performance through a policy of responsible waste treatment, specialized in steel processing.

Recycling steel scrap
Every year, BlueScope Acier discharges 150 tonnes of steel residues from a production output of 6,000 tonnes. This waste is recovered and compacted by a company specializing in recycling. But before this happens, the company reuses as much of the scrap as possible for the manufacture of packaging or specific products (flat sheets, fasteners, etc.).

Paper sorting
Since the beginning of 2010, BlueScope Acier has been sorting paper in collaboration with SAEML Mont-Dore Environnement. Every week, a 220-liter bin of used paper is collected for compacting and export. This initiative has encouraged the company's employees to reduce their paper consumption.

Collect used batteries
BlueScope Acier has joined forces with the non-profit eco-organization Trecodec (Traitement écologique et économique des déchets), which has set up a waste collection, storage and disposal network. BlueScope provides its employees and customers with a bin for collecting used batteries. They are then collected by Trecodec, sorted by component and exported for recycling.
Quality policy
Employee safety, customer satisfaction and compliance with an impeccable quality approach are just some of the challenges that BlueScope Acier has been committed to meeting since its creation.
Safety is everyone's priority
As a good corporate citizen, BlueScope Acier invests in training and prevention. Employees ensure that the rules are applied on a daily basis, and are sometimes the instigators, as in 1997, when they set up a safety manual with the help of CAFAT and the Labour Department. The vital involvement of staff at all levels, risk analysis within the company, regular and operational follow-up through daily checks, work meetings, safety audits and action/prevention plans, are all means used to try and achieve our ZERO ACCIDENT objective.
An ISO 9001-certified company
Very early on, SICOTEC embarked on a "total quality" approach. This approach was rewarded in January 1997 with certification to the ISO 9002 international quality standard, issued by the BVQI (BUREAU VERITAS Qualité International) inspection body.
This standard attests to the maturity and efficiency of BlueScope Acier's quality system. The company's efforts are constant, particularly in terms of continuous improvement and the performance of every process within the company. Our primary objective is customer satisfaction. Obtained ISO 9001-2000 certification in March 2003, then ISO 9001-2015 in April 2017, relating to quality management, issued by AFNOR certification.
This certification was renewed in 2021 and again in 2024.

Reduce your energy costs
Rising energy costs are a real concern for many owners of commercial and industrial premises. That's why roofs with COLORSTEEL® Bounce® coatings can help reduce your energy bills considerably, by keeping heat out of your buildings.
Bounce® technology
COLORSTEEL® Bounce® is a unique coating and paint combination that reflects solar energy, keeping roofs and building interiors cool when temperatures are high outside. This technology works as an additional insulator.
(On order only).

Heat-efficient color
The color of a roof can have an enormous impact on its warmth. Steel is coated with a white COLORSTEEL® Bounce® paint designed to optimize solar reflectance while protecting the environment and reducing your energy bill. Nominal solar reflectance is 77%*.
Lower air-conditioning costs
Reducing air-conditioning costs is a key benefit. Using COLORSTEEL® Bounce® on a roof can also reduce the capital cost of air-conditioning equipment upstream. If you specify from the outset that you want a roof with COLORSTEEL® Bounce® coating, you can reduce peak loads on your air-conditioning system, and consequently the capacity of your equipment.
Reducing the impact of urban heat islands (UHI)
Unlike other roofing materials with lower solar reflectance, COLORSTEEL® Bounce® technology reduces the impact of urban heat islands (UHIs). These temperature rises, especially in summer, can have a significant impact on a community's environment and quality of life. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USA EPA), this can range from energy consumption to emissions of air pollutants, greenhouse gases and degraded water quality.
Increase the longevity of your roof
COLORSTEEL® Bounce® absorbs less heat when it's hot, and protects your roof and its supporting structure from extreme temperatures, allowing your roof to last longer.
Made in New Zealand
With proven strength, durability and a warranty backed by the New Zealand Steel Federation, COLORSTEEL® Bounce® cladding optimizes your building's thermal performance and comfort.
Warranty, ecological categories and maintenance criteria
This coating is suitable for roofing applications only. Please refer to the COLORSTEEL® Endura® roofing recommendations detailed in the Ecological Categories brochure.
